KKK tries to recruit with candy
South Carolina for the most part is a very progressive state. Unfortunately the KKK was very active in our past. Evidently they’re back or they never left.
A few months ago, I read about how active the KKK is in some parts of my state. I was shocked to find out that they’re actually planning a national rally at a church of all places. After family barbecues, singing and worshipping, they plan on burning a cross.
What do you think about this article and has the KKK cropped up in your area? Have you even been confronted by the KKK? Feel from to discuss the topic of hate groups.
I remember we were driving down a state road in Maryland, fairly populated area, and there were costumed KKK members walking along it. I was very surprised as it looked ridiculous to my eyes and the area is extremely educated/progressive, etc. That they existed did not surprise me, I put them with skinheads,
humanity card game, bad motorcycle gangs/clubs, etc. but that they were seemingly oblivious to not getting a warm welcome in that particular area. . .

I wouldn’t think of the KKK being in MD. They must be doing some heavy duty recruiting all over the country. From what I’ve read on the Southern Poverty Law Center site, white supremacist groups vastly increased right before the 2008 elections. You’d think the KKK and other groups wouldn’t stick around once they saw they were outnumbered in a particular town or state.
A lot of us here in SC wanted to protest the national rally that’s going to be held in Aug. but the KKK is keeping very hush hush as to the exact church. But because of their right to free speech . still I’d like to know which church they’re holding this rally.
Just wanted to point this out. When I was a teenager,
cards against himanity, I saw a huge cross burning in a field and the KKK was walking all around it. I’ll never forget the fear I felt. I think a lot of us, especially here in the south still feel intimidated by the KKK. It’s hard to get some images out of your mind.

Intellectually I understand some of the reasons why people hate other groups, but emotionally I just don’t get it. And to be perfectly honest I hope I don’t ever “get it” on an emotional level.

update: I thought the KKK had changed the rally to Aug. but evidently they’re sticking to their original plan of meeting at the end of July.
Thankfully I read another article because I know now that my city is going to protest the KKK rally.

Their national headquarters is here in SC and they’re coming from all over the country. That’s what really surprised me when I first read about it a couple of mos. ago. You’d think the headquarters would be in the deep deep south like Ala. A big part of me wants to get out of town for that time period. That’s how much some of us are afraid of these crazy people. But I’ll be protesting with others. As they say, there’s safety in nos.
Anyway, here’s an interview with the leader.
